Globalisation and Localisation: Exploring Change in Development

Description
Through the use of practical content, self reflection and discussion groups, the course facilitator Dr Sylvia Gavigan asks learners to:
•Look at the structures of power and inequality
•Analyse the root causes of poverty in developing countries
•Share their existing knowledge and then receive an input on where trade rules come from and the international decision making processes at the World Bank, IMF and WTO and the UN.
•Consider what types of action are needed to bring about change for a more just world and what actions they can support in their lives.
•Consider what actions they can take to continue to grow their global awareness.

By the end of the course participants will have:
o Initiated a process of increasing their global awareness which shall continue through the coming years
o Started a process of developing skills for analysis of global and local socio-economic realities, and have been introduced to the use of one set of tools for socio-economic analysis
o Applied those skills to one area of international decision making that influences the lives of the poor.
o Identified the power that they have and some opportunities for them to use that power through actions (in their work and personal lives) that contribute to a more just world
o Identified what they shall do to continue to grow their awareness.
